One of the biggest challenges in losing weight is not the act itself, but finding the motivation to lose weight and stick with your weight loss plan.
Here are a couple of things you can do to keep focused and motivated to reach your weight loss goal.
Steer Clear of Temptation — Staying motivated to lose weight is partially about being smart. If you have a certain weakness for potato chips, or anything else for that matter, just get it out of the house.
If you find yourself getting up and walking to the kitchen and the thought of chips (or whatever) enters your mind, you’ve already lost.
Keep those foods out of the house! If other people in your family demand those foods, then politely ask them the support you in your weight loss by keeping them and eating them outside the house.
Set Realistic Goals – Set goals that you actually believe are possible. Nothing gets you more motivated than to actually have faith that something will work. Why not have faith in your weight loss plan and follow it whole-heartedly? Also, don’t try and lose weight too fast. You are more likely to follow through with steady, gradual weight loss. Plus, it is healthier too.
Reward Yourself — If you’ve stuck to your diet or exercise routine for certain period of time, use that as an excuse to reward yourself. This will help associate positive feelings to sticking with your weight loss plan, and it will also motivate you to push through those hard times. Good rewards are things that you enjoy, but would not normally treat yourself to. Yes, you might even treat yourself to a nice dessert or favorite food!
Go Easy on Yourself — Don’t beat yourself up if you find that you didn’t reach your weight loss goal for a week or a month. You’re not going to lose those pounds by feeling bad about yourself. In fact the best way to motivate yourself to lose weight in such situations is to use that as an opportunity to examine what, if anything could be changed to improve your weight loss plan.
Stay One Step Ahead of Hunger – You are more likely to fail at your diet if you let yourself feel hungry often. To motivate yourself to lose weight you must stay one step ahead of hunger.
Eat several small meals throughout the day instead of three big meals. This will spread the calories out over the course of a normal day so that you don’t feel hungry in between meals. Also, drink plenty of water. Water is great at filling your stomach so that you don’t feel hungry, plus drinking your water has all sorts of health benefits.
Find an Activity that You Enjoy — One of the easiest ways to to find motivation to lose weight is to make losing weight fun! If you love soccer, than you should join a local soccer team. If you like to swim, go to the community pool (or the one in your backyard, if you’re fortunate enough to have a pool).
Activities that you enjoy doing are great because you don’t need to convince yourself to do them. You just somehow find ways to squeeze them in no matter what.
So, hopefully this has given you plenty of ways you can find motivation to lose weight and stick with your weight loss plan. Weight loss doesn’t have to be so hard if you learn to stack the deck in your favor.
